The Triumph of Identity Politics; The Bottomlessness of White Guilt

Obama is not only the apparent answer to all problems that beset Blacks. He is not only a sign of the bottomless guilt of whites: At last – a person of color they could elect President! How much guilt does that wash away?
He is the latest incarnation of the Magic Negro. Since the beginning of his campaign, and encouraged by his Biblically-tinged rhetoric, people have projected all their hopes onto him (much as Barbra Streisand once gushed, “Bill Clinton’s gonna fix everything”). His election means that all of America’s problems will magically disappear, via “change we can believe in.”
